My tour started in central Pennsylvania, opening for Stacey Earle and Mark Stuart at the Acoustic Brew concert series. The concerts are held in an old church that is now a yoga center and run by a crew of excellent and dedicated volunteers. All the shows are done unmiked and the room loves sound.

I have vivid memories of some of the sonic landmarks in my hometown: the electric carillon in the Methodist church, the whistle of the commuter train at the railroad crossing, the different, more haunting whistle of the freight trains that run at night. The most distinctive local sound, however, is the klaxon at the volunteer fire station.

Today’s business is going over the itinerary and making sure we know where we’re going and when we need to be there. For a few dates, we still need to arrange places to stay. I set up my laptop and we sit side-by-side at my mother’s desk, sending emails and Googling directions.
